On the one hand tropical environments are considered to be public goods that need to be preserved. On the other hand they are seen as natural resources that can be exploited for globalized production processes. Regarding the question of soy cultivation, the contradictions between environmental protection, sustainable development and economic globalization become very obvious: A plant which originally stems from Asia is cultivated in South America in order to feed a booming China. The symposium will show the global context in which the future of tropical ecosystems have to be discussed. In a round-table talk, European perspectives are to be confronted with environmental approaches of the South.
