Science in the Field – Transregional Scientific Fields

Main objective of the multidisciplinary symposium is to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the field as a specific knowledge arena. Three complementary dimensions of the field will be taken into account: The work in the field, the objects of the field and the circulation between the field and the centres of knowledge production, transfer and storage. The field is an “invention” of the metropolis; it cannot exist without the centres where the experiences of the field are processed, consolidated and disseminated and the material impacts of the knowledge processes of the field are organized, archived and mixed up. Key institutions of the metropolis are universities and academies, museums, libraries and archives, botanical and zoological gardens. One question will be how actors, knowledge and objects travel between the field, the centres and the centres of the periphery.
