1974 - 2024. Celebrating the Carnation Revolution in Portugal

Hommage

On April 25, 1974, an authoritarian and anachronistic regime in Portugal was brought to an end by an impressive peaceful revolution. The so-called Carnation Revolution marked the beginning of a great wave of democratization in Europe. This milestone in history will be honored in a multifaceted event. In a keynote speech and discussion, the decisive role of Germany and some of its institutions in the creation of a genuine multi-party system will be highlighted. The weaknesses of Western democracies today and ways to strengthen them will also be discussed in this context. The event will begin with a digital exhibition on the long and prosperous relationship between Germany and Portugal and end with a concert of iconic songs of April 25, demonstrating the power of art in the face of censorship.
