The IAI has a collegial management body that is responsible for the overall direction, governance, and strategic development of the institute. All of the institute’s departments are represented on the board, as is the administration as the central enabling structure.
The members are: Barbara Göbel (Director), Peter Altekrüger (Library Director and Deputy Director), Peter Birle (Director of the Research Department), Christoph Müller (Head of IT Infrastructure and Digital Collections and Deputy Library Director) and René Piletzki (Head of Administration). In addition to the collegial management body, regular meetings of department and unit heads and team meetings of the individual departments take place. The IAI is also involved in the cross-departmental areas, working groups, and committees of the SPK.
The Scientific Advisory Board critically monitors the work of the IAI and advises it on strategic issues. Dirk Messner (President of the German Environment Agency) chairs the board during the appointment period.
In close consultation with the scientific advisory board, the IAI regularly evaluates its work areas, institutional spheres of influence, and international networks. These evaluations are an important basis for the institute’s cross-departmental strategy processes.
The key points of the vision and objectives for the next few years are set out in the paper: “Strategic Development of the Ibero-American Institute (2022-2026 (PDF, 146.48 KB) (opens in a new window), (this file is not accessible).”
The IAI works according to the principles of appreciative and constructive cooperation and leadership, for which participation, communication, transparency, and cultural openness are fundamental. Aspects of diversity are actively incorporated into the work and management of the institute.
