The IAI in detail

The Ibero-Amerikanische Institut (IAI, Ibero-American Institute) is a non-university research institute for the humanities, cultural studies and social sciences. As an area studies institution, it has a regional focus – Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, Portugal – and also takes transregional interrelations into account. The equal integration of different areas of work under one roof – Collections, Research and Events – is what gives the institute its unique profile.

The Ibero-Amerikanische Institut (IAI, Ibero-American Institute) is a multidisciplinary non-university research institute for the humanities, cultural studies and social sciences. As an area studies institution, it has a regional focus – Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal – but also takes transregional interconnections into account. This gives it a truly international orientation.

The equal integration of different areas of work under one roof – Collections, Research and Events – is what gives the institute its unique profile.

The IAI’s Library and Special Collections have outstanding holdings worldwide on the institute’s key regions. They are characterized by their cultural diversity, geographical breadth, and historical depth. The central tasks of the institute are to further develop these multimedia collections, which we consider to be a shared global cultural heritage, to make them accessible, to make them widely available, and to preserve them for the future.

On the basis of its collections, the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut develops its own research activities, engages in collaborative projects with universities, hosts international scholars, and realizes a multilingual publication program. The institute is thus a place of cooperative knowledge production and knowledge transfer as well as cultural translations.

Cultural and scientific events are a central element of the institute’s mediation, education and outreach within society. The event program has a cross-genre, multidisciplinary, and multilingual orientation and is carried out with a wide range of partners.

The Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut has an excellent network of contacts in science and culture at both the national and international level. Cooperations, multilingualism and the inclusion of diverse cultural perspectives are fundamental components of our work. Due to its profile, the institute plays a distinct bridging role between different actors, institutions, fields of knowledge and regions.

The IAI was founded in 1930 and has been part of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (SPK, Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) since 1962. With its libraries, museums, archives, and research institutes, the foundation is one of the largest cultural and scientific institutions worldwide. The SPK has national responsibilities and is supported and jointly financed by the federal government (Bund) and all federal states (Länder). Together with the other SPK institutions, the IAI develops innovative strategies and formats for internationalization, research, cultural heritage preservation, digital transformation, education, and mediation.
