I have been the director of the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (IAI, Ibero-American Institute) since 2005. I am also a member of the interim board of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, SPK) and have been an honorary professor at the Freie Universität Berlin since 2017. In the international joint project Mecila “Maria Sibylla Merian Center Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America (Mecila)” (BMBF), I conduct research as a Mecila Principal Investigator, lead a subproject and am currently one of the coordinating directors. In 2024, I took over the chair of the German Latin America Research Association (ADLAF) for the IAI.
After studying social anthropology, prehistory, and economic and social history and completing my doctorate, I worked at several German and one French university and was involved in other international, interdisciplinary projects. I have been a visiting professor in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, and the United States. I am a member of several committees and expert advisory boards of national and international organizations and funding agencies. I was awarded the Argentine Premio Leloir 2021. My research focuses on the anthropology of nature, socio-ecological inequalities, the geopolitics of knowledge, knowledge infrastructures and digital transformation.
