In the first half of the 20th century, Mexico became a laboratory for political and cultural reconfigurations in which exiles played an important role. Against this backdrop, the DFG Research Unit “TransExil: Negotiations of Aesthetics and Community in Post-Revolutionary Mexico” examines the networks established by exiles from various backgrounds with local artists, writers, and intellectuals. Mexico is understood as an exemplary contact zone where multiple networks are established.
The workshop focuses on the temporal and spatial boundary crossings that go along with the experience of exile. “Translocality” explores how translocal situations shape cultural production and aesthetics. “Transhistoricity” examines different conceptions of time that converge in exile contexts, are accompanied by ruptures in the experience of the self and the world, and raise awareness of the historical contingency of one’s own cultural orientations.
An event organized by the DFG Research Unit “TransExil: Negotiations of Aesthetics and Community in Post-Revolutionary Mexico” in collaboration with the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (IAI).
