Image Archive
The Image Archive of the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (IAI) contains materials that are an integral part of the Institute's bequests and are closely linked to the other Special Collections of the IAI. These include photographs, slides, photographic glass plates, film negatives and postcards, a total of 216,300 image documents. The photographs relate to Spain, Portugal and Latin America, in particular Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Peru. Many date from the early years of photographic technology. The IAI's 8.300 photographic glass plates and 1.100 film negatives were catalogued and largely digitized in 2013 as part of a cataloguing project funded by the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM, Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien). The digitized material is available via the online catalog and the IAI's Digital Collections. Out of respect for cultural sensitivities, access to individual images may be restricted.

Conditions of use
Generally all materials in the image archive are reference material and can only be consulted in the IAI reading room. Out of respect for cultural sensitivities, access to individual images may be restricted. To request the desired materials, you must fill out the online form and make an appointment with one of the contact persons. Glass plates and photo negatives are excluded from any form of loan for conservation reasons.
Upon written request, reproductions can be made for scientific purposes. However, this is only possible for materials for which the IAI holds the copyright or which are in the public domain. Likewise, there must be no reasons of preservation to prevent this. Out of respect for cultural sensitivities, access to individual images may be restricted.
