Donald Trump'seconomic and migration policy poses new challenges for many Latin American countries. The Scientific Director of the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (IAI, Ibero-American Institute) analyzes how differently the governments in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina and El Salvador are dealing with this on the occasion of a Latin America focus in arte Magazin. The potential consequences of the mass deportations planned by the Trump administration are particularly dramatic for many Latin American countries. They not only present the countries affected with enormous social challenges, but also huge economic problems, as the remittances from compatriots living and working in the USA are an important economic factor for many countries, according to the political scientist.
The interview was conducted as part of the three-part documentary series "Dictatorships, Drugs, Violence - Latin America and the USA". The series will be broadcast by arte on June 24, 2025 in combination with a documentary on Argentinian society and the government of President Javier Milei.
