Köhler, Ulrich (1937–2016)
Ulrich Köhler was a German ethnologist and scholar in ancient American studies. He studied economics and ethnology in Frankfurt, Paris, Kiel and Freiburg as well as at Northwestern University (USA). From 1987–2002, he held the Chair of Ethnology and was Director of the Institut für Völkerkunde (Institute of Ethnology) at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. Köhler’s research focused on the applied and practice-oriented ethnology of contemporary indigenous societies in southern Mexico and Guatemala, particularly the Tzotzil, as well as the cultural history of Mesoamerican pre-Columbian cultures, especially the Aztecs.
Material: Approximately 24 shelf meters of written documents, notebooks, drafts, manuscripts, transcripts, diaries, audio tapes, slides, photos, etc.
