Hickmann, Ellen (1934–2017)
Ellen Hickmann was a German musicologist. She studied prehistory, ethnology, and musicology in Vienna and Hamburg. Hickmann was professor of musicology at the University of Music, Drama, and Media in Hanover from 1976 to 1999. She was co-founder and chair of the Study Group on Music Archaeology (now the International Study Group on Music Archaeology). Her research focused on music archaeology, with a geographical focus on Mexico, Ecuador, and Costa Rica, among other places. Before being appointed professor, Hickmann worked as a record producer in the fields of classical music and ethnology and received two Grammy Award nominations.
