From the first edition of Manuel Puig’s El beso de la mujer araña (Kiss of the Spider Woman, 1976) to Amora by Rosa María Roffiel (1989)—considered Mexico’s first openly lesbian novel—and the autobiographical work Antes que anochezca (1992) by the Cuban dissident Reinaldo Arenas—who contracted AIDS and died in the U.S.—and which was adapted into the film Before Night Falls ( 2000) starring Javier Bardem and Johnny Depp —to contemporary comics from Chile by Victoria Rubio, better known as Lesbilais—the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (IAI) is showcasing a selection from its diverse collections of queer literature from Latin America in three display cases for Pride Month 2026, supplemented by works of social science literature on LGBTQIA+ communities, diversity, and the rights of queer people in Latin America.
