The NMUN – National Model United Nations – is the world's largest simulation of a United Nations conference. Traditionally, several thousand students from all over the world come together every year in New York and elsewhere. At this conference, each university represents one of the 193 UN member states or a non-governmental organization in the various committees and tries to represent and contribute the interests of the country in the best possible way. The aim is to put yourself in the shoes of the respective country and act as the real delegates would. In this authentic UN simulation, the students, who were selected in a two-part selection process, get to know the United Nations system: Using English as the language of negotiation, they improve their rhetoric, give speeches and debate, learn to compromise and resolve conflicts.

Last year, the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (IAI) welcomed an NMUN delegation from Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (external link, opens in a new window), representing the Latin American state of Uruguay. The highlight in 2026 will be participation in an international conference in London, where the interdisciplinary delegation will represent several countries this year. As part of a preparatory study tour in Berlin, the group also came together at the IAI and met with Patrick Rosenow from the German United Nations Association (DGVN), who gave an overview of the work and goals of the DGVN. He also described his personal view of the United Nations and categorized its role and challenges from his professional experience.
