From April 2017, the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) will establish the new research college "Conviviality in Unequal Societies: Perspectives from Latin America" as a project partner together with German and Latin American institutions.
Based in São Paulo, Brazil, the humanities and social sciences research college is being coordinated by Freie Universität Berlin. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding it as the "Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Advanced Studies".
Barbara Göbel, Director of the IAI, emphasizes: "The project is of great importance in terms of science policy. It sends out an important signal for the expansion of cooperation between Germany and Latin America in the social sciences and humanities.
A consortium of seven institutions is responsible for carrying out the project: Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin, coordination), Universität zu Köln (UzK) and Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (IAI) on the German side, as well as Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento (CEBRAP) in Brazil, Instituto de Investigaciones en Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales (CONICET/ Universidad Nacional de La Plata) in Argentina, and El Colegio de México (COLMEX), Mexico.
