Papers and Manuscripts
The Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut(IAI) holds 334 bequests and preliminary bequests. These are bequests from various groups of people with connections to Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, or Portugal, including travelers, scientists, writers, translators, and politicians. In addition, there are collections on German-speaking emigration to Latin America and the Caribbean and on German-speaking minorities. More detailed information about the bequests held by the IAI can be found further down this page by using the keyword search under “Search in the Papers and Manuscripts Collection” or the A-Z search.
The estates and bequests are characterized by a wide variety of materials: notebooks, vocabulary lists, data collections, letters, pictorial documents such as photographs, postcards, or glass plates, sketches or plans, manuscripts, or personal documents such as certificates, and much more. More recent holdings are characterized by a hybrid nature, combining analog and digital materials. The Special Collections have developed strategies for handling these materials.
With support from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the Bundesbeauftragter für Kultur und Medien (BKM), the estates of geographer Hans Steffen (1865–1936), archaeologist Max Uhle (1856–1944), political scientist Wolfgang Hirsch-Weber (1920-2004), photographer and Maya researcher Teobert Maler (1842-1917), and physical anthropologist and ethnologist Robert Lehmann-Nitsche (1872-1938) have been formally catalogued and made accessible for research via the IAI's online catalog (external link, opens in a new window). Partial holdings are available online for research via the IAI's digital collections (external link, opens in a new window).
Conditions and contact
Conditions of use
As a matter of principle, all materials in the papers and manuscripts collection can only be consulted in the IAI reading room. To request the desired materials, you must submit an application for use and make an appointment.
Reproductions can be made for scientific purposes upon written request. However, this is only possible for materials for which the IAI holds the copyright or which are in the public domain. Likewise, there must be no reasons of preservation to prevent this. Out of respect for cultural sensitivities, access to individual images may be restricted. The request for scans is available here.
