Vargas, Max T. (1874-1959)

Max T. Vargas was a Peruvian photographer from Arequipa. He opened a studio there in 1903, later followed by a second branch in La Paz (Bolivia). His students included Martín Chambi and Carlos and Miguel Vargas, who ran a photography studio called Hermanos Vargas. Max T. Vargas sold photographs and postcards. He left Arequipa in 1920 and is believed to have opened a photography studio in Lima. 

Material:
1 case. All materials date from around 1903 to 1920.
 

  • 48 black-and-white photographs (Peru and Bolivia: landscapes, excavation sites, views of cities, architecture)
  • 82 postcards (black-and-white, some hand-colored)
