3. Short description
Point of departure
The section “Digital object mobility. Recent technologies and transatlantic exchange of knowledge” is coordinated by IAI and is a part of the base project „Mobile Objects“ within Image Knowledge Gestaltung. An Interdisciplinary Laboratory (2012-2017, Cluster of Excellence at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG / www.interdisciplinary-laboratory.hu-berlin.de/de/Mobile-Objekte). The base project is conducted by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Chair for the History of Science and Hermann von Helmholtz Centre for the Study of Cultural Competencies) as well as Museum für Naturkunde - Leibniz Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity Science. Following a year-long preparation phase , the project will run between Mai 2015 and April 2017.
The base project “Mobile Objects” focuses on cultural and natural objects and investigates their contexts of emergence, their movements and their transformations. Objects were and are collected, classified, subsequently prepared and conserved. The object’s state of maximal stability – with regard not only to its visible form, but also to its designation within a classification system – is confronted by a state of maximal mobility through different spaces of knowledge. By analyzing exemplary forms of (im-)mobility of objects, the project seeks to describe interdisciplinary as well as transnational epistemic logics. Using the resources of different collections and institutions, the base project will comparatively analyze different understandings of objects. The goal is to question familiar categorizations and to more clearly elucidate the relationships between institution, actors, practice and object.
The historically as well as ethnographically centered research questions will be investigated in three closely linked sections:
-Section „Political object mobility. Natural history collections in Berlin’s post-war era”, coordinated by Dr. Ina Heumann (Museum für Naturkunde - Leibniz Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity Science)
-Section „Object mobility in the musem. The exhibition boom and the international circulation of museum objects in the 1970s”, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Anke te Heesen (Department of History, HU Berlin)
-Section „Digital object mobility. Recent technologies and transatlantic exchange of knowledge”, coordinated by Dr. Barbara Göbel (IAI)

Objectives
The section „Digital object mobility. Recent technologies and transatlantic exchange of knowledge” is coordinated by the Ibero-American Institute and investigates the effects of the digital shift on object practices, on the status of objects and the role of the „object manager” within institutional structures, as well as on the trans-institutional movements of objects. The circulation of objects between Germany and Latin America forms a particular emphasis within the section. On the basis of concrete case studies, we seek to analyze how spaces and formats of international cooperation are impacted by the digital shift. The project is hence embedded in the IAI’s research theme "Knowledge Production and Cultural Transfers: Latin America in Trans-regional Contexts". Moreover, we want to seize the opportunity to make a contribution to the study of the digital transformation within the broader research strategy of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.
Task Schedule
The objective of the section is to systematically survey digitization as a new kind of mobility form and practice for objects. We will analyze the interactions between actors and objects within their respective institutional contexts. Apart from the IAI’s own digitization processes, other institutional configurations such as the Museum für Naturkunde or the scientific collections at Humboldt Universität will be included in the investigation. The aspect of internationalization will complement the analysis in two ways: on the one hand, the impact of the digital shift on transatlantic object mobility will be explored on the basis of cooperative projects with Latin America. On the other hand, questions surrounding object management, research practices as well as translation and transformation processes will be examined by observing specific object collections that are spread over different institutions and countries (e.g. photographs of the Mapuche from the late 19th century, art designs of the Mexican engraver and caricaturist José Guadalupe Posada).
Expected Results
The three sections will analyze object movements while taking into account their historical as well as more recent formations. The research process will be reflected upon and advanced through presentations, workshops and conferences. The results will be secured in the form of publications.
