A “New Silk Road of Culture”? China's cultural policy engagement in Latin America and Africa

Diskussion

Based on two recent publications of the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa), the round table will reflect on objectives and strategies of the People’s Republic of China’s cultural diplomacy in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa, including Chinese investments in the culture sectors of the aforementioned regions. In exchange with Lutz Möller (German UNESCO Commission) and Hanns W. Maull (SWP – Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik/German Institute for International and Security Affairs) the authors Ximena Zapata (GIGA) and Avril Joffe (Wits University Johannesburg) present and discuss their research findings regarding the most relevant actors, channels and means through which cultural exchanges are implemented in both regions and identify the most salient examples of Chinese cultural initiatives in the 21st century. Moderation: Bert Hoffmann (GIGA)
