From High to Low Profile? Brazil´s 21st Century International Relations

Cristina Soreanu Pecequilo

Vortrag

The foreign policy of Lula da Silva (2003-2010) represented a high profile stance for Brazil, sustaining a comprehensive political, social, economic and strategic agenda based on South-South cooperation and autonomy. From the Americas to Africa, to Europe and Asia, Brazil played an increasing global role, in bilateral and multilateral arenas. By then, few would disagree that the nation gained ground as one of the leaders of the Third World, together with its other "BRICS" partners. However, since 2011 with Dilma Rousseff´s government, some question whether this power and willingness have drifted way due to domestic
and international pressures.
In her lecture Prof. Dr. Cristina Soreanu Pecequilo (Universidade Federal de São Paulo) will discuss if Brazil has lost its moment with its international relations downgrading from a high to a low profile.
