Chactún, Lagunita and Tamchén: Three recently discovered Maya cities in the central Yucatan peninsula, Mexico

Vortrag

Vortragsreihe zur Ausstellung "Die Maya – Sprache der Schönheit"

In the course of archaeological reconnaissance works during the last two decades in the state of Campeche, some 80 formerly unknown Maya sites have been recorded. Three particularly interesting sites, named Chactún, Tamchén and Lagunita are the first archaeological sites known so far in a vast, archaeologically unexplored and hardly accessible area overgrown with tropical forest of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. The extent of the sites, the impressive building masses and the carved monuments reveal that the cities figured as important centers of regional political hierarchy. Having measured and analyzed hundreds of alignments in various Mesoamerican regions, Dr. Ivan Šprajc (Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts Ljubljana) will offer novel interpretations of aspects of architectural and urban planning.
