Guerrilla Narratives from Africa and Latin America: A Comparative Perspective

Sophie Esch

Vortrag

Twentieth century liberation movements were a key period of South-South exchanges. Born out of the immediacy of the lived experience of armed conflict, guerrilla writings are one of the primary literary expressions of that period. The lecture by Sophie Esch, Ph.D. (Rice University, Houston and currently Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung at the IAI) proposes a comparison of three texts usually seen as peripheral within world literature, if defined in eurocentric or Anglophone terms, but that are central to both national and global storytelling about armed struggle and the so-called Cold War. These are the novel Mayombe (1980) by Pepetela from Angola, the testimonio Los días de la selva (The Days of the Jungle,1980) by Mario Payeras from Guatemala, and the testimonio La montaña es algo más que una inmensa estepa verde (Fire from the Mountain, 1982) by Omar Cabezas from Nicaragua. Through this “eccentric comparison” of guerrilla narratives from Central America and Luso-Africa, this talk reveals an aspect largely overlooked in Cold War literature, namely that guerrilla narratives from the Global South constitute a particular form of nature writing.

The event will take place via the Cisco Webex program.
