Recognition and Post-Identity: Politics and Theory of Affects from the Periphery of Global Capitalism
(please note the change of date from 21. to 28.1.)

Vladimir Pinheiro Safatle

Vortrag

The topic of struggles for recognition has become a fundamental device for understanding the dynamics of social conflicts in contemporary societies. However, such struggles currently tend to be theorized from the immanent tensions to the demands of social identity. Such a normative choice has decisive effects not only for the interpretation of the phenomena in question, but in the political consequences that may be derived from such struggles.

In his lecture, Dr. Vladimir Pinheiro Safatle (Universidade de São Paulo) proposes to discuss an alternative way to think the immanent dynamics of such struggles, insisting on the need to overcome the structure of affects that underpins the identity reading of recognition. To this end, he starts from the contemporary processes of political struggles in Latin America, characterizing them as renewed configurations to think the problem of recognition.
