Digital Mayas: Resisting the silencing of indigenous voices in Yucatán
Vortragsreihe zur Ausstellung "Die Maya – Sprache der Schönheit"
Since the 1980s, Maya intellectuals on the Yucatán peninsula have resumed old writing traditions and, at the same time, developed new forms of scholarship, theatre and music. The dawn of the 21st century has seen this movement flourish into a diversity of projects that use digital technology in new and creative ways.
Dr. Genner Llanes-Ortiz (University of Leiden) focuses his talk on the significant efforts led by Maya activists, artists and thinkers to re-invigorate their heritage, to counter the silencing of their voices, and to assert their place in Mexican society.
