Research Projects
Edition Project: Letters between Guatemala and Germany: A family correspondence from the time of National Socialism (1935-1939).
In 2017, the Ibero-American Institute acquired a bequest consisting of 350 written documents and a photo album. These are the letters and photographs from the Becker family, who ran a banana plantation in Guatemala, to the eldest son, who was undergoing professional training in Hamburg from 1935. Reports from Guatemala tell of everyday life in the German colony, of economic successes and failures, and of plans for the future, in German or Spanish. Political events in Europe and Central America are also discussed. The goal of the project is the edition and, if necessary, translation of the letters and their contextualization through scholarly contributions in one volume.Duration 2023-2025 (Funding: BKM, see Third party funded projects/Ongoing projects)
