Library and Reading Room Cards
Who can borrow books?
The library of the Ibero-American Institute (IAI) is open to all interested users. There are two types of user IDs: If you are a resident of Berlin or a student or staff member of an institute of higher education in Berlin, Postdam or Frankfurt/Oder, you may borrow books for home use (Library Card). We make materials available to all other users in the reading room (Reading Room Card).
From now on, minors starting from the age of 16 years and counting with their parents' consent are allowed to obtain a Library Card or a Reading Room Card.
What does a user ID cost and how long is it valid?
The Library Card costs €30 and the Reading Room Card €12. Both are valid for 365 days. We offer special fees for institutions and for persons receiving unemployment or welfare benefits.
If you already have a valid twelve-month ID for the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Berlin State Library), we will issue you an IAI ID for the same period free of charge, if you comply with the above conditions.
How do I apply for an ID?
Please bring your ID, passport and electronic driving license and the fee (in cash, EC cash or Visa/Master credit card) to the reference counter.
To apply for a Library Card to take books home with you, we require the following documents:
Berlin residents please bring confirmation of your registration with the authorities (Anmeldebestätigung) or your ID. Students or staff members of a university in Berlin, Potsdam or Frankfurt/Oder are asked to provide proof of university affiliation (student ID, employment contract, etc.). If you are not an EU citizen of if you are stateless you need to show your residence permit or proof of an employment contract with some institution within the EU which will have to be valid for a minimum of three more months.
Our staff will issue you a user ID immediately.
Can I apply for an user ID online?
We are working on this option. Currently, you can renew your Reading Room Card (yellow) online. Please fill this form out completely.
We will process your request and then send you a confirmation by e-mail. Please allow one or two working days for a response.
